Fox Island Torpedo / London type-in/out

More photos of the Torpedo 18b can be seen at its typewriter database gallery.

The 2014 London type-in/out will be held in the South Kensington area. The meetingplace will be the Science Museum entrance, seen in the picture below from Google Maps. If it's raining, we will meet right inside the entrance, otherwise by the benches outside.

The plan then will be: If raining or forecasted to rain, go to the Hoop & Toy pub (same as last year's type-in location). If clear, go to a selected outdoor location with convenient tables and shelters for a type-out.

  1. See you there! I doubt there will be too much confusion between the typewriters and everyone else but good to have an ID photo all the same.

    1. Well, I figured I might make my way into a few unflattering photos at the type-in, so I wanted to set the record straight that I don't look ugly in every photo.

  2. Sand Dollar. Never soon one before. And look at you! It is good to put a face to the words we read. Now, if we can work on a voice...

Lovely spot to drop a torpedo.

    1. Here's a video explaining sand dollars—there were hundreds of them along the beach there, and I'd never seen alive ones before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uwOURjneWQ

Well, I've never heard yours. :p

    1. When you have a few Torpedoes it's nice to have typeface variety as well as color/design variation. :)

There are quite a few differences between this version of Torpedo 18 and the more common one—much like comparing the SM2 to the SM3.

  4. Beautiful spot, but it makes me nervous -- I can envision that Torpedo tumbling into the water!

Enjoy the type-in, that pub is delightful and so are the typospherians of England.

    1. Same here—I did most of the typing on the benches safe away from the water. The ledges were surprisingly sturdy though.

  5. That Torpedo has a lot of similarities to an Olympia SM3, right down to what I can see of the case and its hold-down release.

    1. Throughout the years, there have been some shared aspects between German typewriters. These are prevalent enough that they sometimes are kind of like an unofficial industry standard—take the ubiquitous German paper arm that folds up from the side and extends to be twice its' length.

There are definitely similarities between the SM3 and the 18—though the Torpedo is a better typewriter in many ways.
