Flag in the wind: 2014 Tacoma type-out

It was a perfect day for a type-out. 6 people took part—not counting a couple interested bystanders and an appearance from Eugene Onegin. It started out with a bit of wind and the table in the shade, and got sunnier and less windy as the type-out continued, before being shaded again.

Groma Modell N made a fashionably late appearance, and probably stole the show. That isn't to say that there weren't many other exciting typewriters to try out, because there were! I especially liked the semi-musical Remington 10 and the white Royal Model P with apothecary symbols. (and of course I am proud that my Erika 11 was also well-loved)

  1. The back to back Voss & Halda make a nice pairing. Are the colours really that similar. Whose sm5? I haven't used mine in ages but it is a rather knackered example.

    1. The Halda is in crinkle paint, but yes they are actually very similar in color. The Voss is a bit whiter, though.

The SM5 belongs to Elizabeth (of LFP), she brought it because it needed work on the return lever which I managed to fix, it hadn't been cleaned up yet.

  3. Looks great. I bet most everyone got the chance to type on a model or style of machine they had never encountered before.

  5. I feel like I got a lot more than I gave! I didn't have anything too exotic or special to bring: just the Lettera 31 and an Olympia SM-5, which Nick helped fix. But it really was fun seeing and trying so many typewriters. I think the Erika was my favorite of the day: I love the snap of it, and it is truly a thing of beauty. It was also really cool to see a Groma in person--and that italic Voss.

Thank you so much for organizing this! And for the photos and scans of the day.
