Collection

When I upload my typecasts they get a slight grey cast on them now, and I don't know why. I haven't changed anything I'm doing and re-editing the scans in photoshop to make them lighter does nothing.

  1. I often find myself wondering where the line is between writer and collector when it comes to typewriters. I don't think there's a singular descriptor that pinpoints how and in what way I appreciate these pieces of industrial art.

As for the greying of the page issue, I noticed a few days ago that a particularly dark photo of mine was gamma-shifted when it was uploaded, giving it a hazy brighter look. I'm wondering if yours has been down shifted because of the highlights. Mind you, the lettering looks a kind of grey as well. I think google has been messing with the matrix again.

    1. Even after this lengthy reflection, I'm still not satisfied with my own self-analysis. I think that it isn't really a thing that needs to be addressed, but it's there and I can't help but try to figure it out.

When I upload an image, at first most of my photos and scans have looked darker in the thumbnail and when I insert them. But if I close the upload window, they refresh and look normal. They still change now, but not as much. Who knows.

    2. Well, I can understand that. Reflect all you may, but really you can't always qualify the reasons for things. As they say in the classics - some thing just are what they are.

  2. Every since my collection started to grow I wonder am I a hoarder or do I collect. Then hoarders really are collectors that collect everything, including trash, and do not know where to stop. I guess I fall into collector.

Great post. It makes me take a good look at myself.

As far as grey shift; I get that with SimpleScan since it will render anything not 100% white a bit greay and with black text the grey is a bit worse. With Xsane I can adjust to make even a grey background on 92% white paper snow white if the page only has black text. More involved if it is a scanned photo with color shift. I have never taken the time to calibrate my scanner/monitor/camera. If I do not like the way something displays I edit it if there is time or as can be seen on my blog I post it color shift and all.

    1. Regarding the grey shift, there are simple adjustments other than "brightness" that work well for scanned, typed pages. I have posted some examples here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rdj999/sets/72157642552251393/ The examples use Photoshop Elements, but one or the other of these adjustments are generally available in all software that provides basic cropping/adjustment of images.

    2. The problems I'm having are completely with Blogger. I already adjust for brightness and contrast before I upload; it's only been recently that on Blogger my scans look bad. I've been doing the same thing for the past 3 years of my blog, with the same scanner even.

  3. I'm an unabashed collector, but also a working typist, and I have gotten a lot of pleasure out of the latter in the last few years.

Good point about the "flatness" of the typosphere. No snobbishness among us!

    1. I knew you were a collector. ;) Now I'm a little curious about how your relationship with typewriters has changed over the past 20 (whatever) years!

Really the only things that vary are the amounts of knowledge stored in our brains, and typewriters in our closets.
