1950 Groma Modell N 277395 |
a strange face, to say the least
Smith-Corona was not the only typewriter manufacturer with a return lever that adjusted depending on the linespace setting so on a lower setting one doesn't have to pull it as far as on a higher setting. Compare this photo with the one below to see how on the 4 setting, the lever sticks out farther than on the 1 setting. Smith-Coronas didn't have 4 choices, of course!

Beautiful! I love the little "meh" face on the paper rest. :D
ReplyDeleteIf I could have just one typewriter THAT might be it!
ReplyDeleteI think whoever did that in 1950 didn't regret it. :)
DeleteI have always found this groma striking. Thanks for the review and pifs. I especially like your first pic bc it really highlights its style and smoothness
ReplyDeleteGroma definitely outdid themselves compared to other German manufacturers when it comes to style. Though there are many other beautiful German typewriters of the time, they usually were either simpler in design, or else a little clumsy.
DeleteStunning Grama, congratulations. "Anachronist" is spot-on.
ReplyDeleteAs you may remember, I've featured my own Groma Modell N before, and I do personally think that these are one the most beautiful machines ever made. Mind you, my machine has glass key tops that are nothing like these bright green things. That seems to change the look of the machine a bit. Not necessarily in a bad way, but I do personally prefer my glass key tops.
ReplyDeleteWhether the keytops are glass, or black plastic with red details, or green, it does change the character. The green square keys are a fascinating choice and they work surprisingly well, though I agree not quite as well as the glass (which I hope to get one of some day, of course!.)
DeleteGraceful. Sexy. Beautiful. How do you get such a gorgeous polish on this without damaging the decals?
ReplyDeleteI use a light, colorless oil (gun oil, out of habit, but it seems like it is one of the best choices) which I rub into the paint and then buff out with a soft cloth. It'll attract dust like crazy if you don't buff it enough and wipe the surface oil off.
