Smith-Corona Script of Vertical Nature

1956 Smith-Corona Silent-Super 5T370396

Turn your head upside-down.
The script kinda looks like Georgian when you look at it that way...such fate. What fate.

  1. Man, you are lucky! If you want to turn it around for a handsome profit, please consider me to be first in line. Please? Pretty please?

  2. I do love the colour and look of those machines, but they are the start of SC's downward slope.

You've done well to get one of those machines with that typeface. I wouldn't say no to one myself, but as far as script typefaces are concerned - my feeling is that there is a reason it wasn't so popular. I just can't find a love for it myself, and I think that the more common script typeface is much more refined and elegant.

    1. I actually prefer these machines and the ones that came immediately later (My blue galaxie-style Super Sterling comes to mind) to the earlier Super-5s.

It's certainly a weird one, pretty limited in its use. I don't know why it appeals to me so strongly!

  3. I love that typeface, too. Don't know why, but it makes me happy. Otherwise I'm not a fan of script fonts - too "frilly". But this one is just goofy enough to be fun. If I hadn't found the same recently (http://tonymindling.blogspot.com/2013/10/meet-rusty-and-ollie.html) I'd be insanely jealous. I have at least one additional Silent-Super in standard pica, and consider these excellent machines. Rusty, my vertical script version, is typing well now as purchased, and once he gets a good cleaning and servicing he will definitely be in the letter-writing starting lineup - the grandkids will love it!

    1. It's broken through the "I'm too serious and sensible for script typefaces" wall for me too. XD Yours was quite a surprise find! I'd never have guessed when I saw it when you posted it.

    2. I agree Tony! This is a typeface that makes happy, it embodies fun, is not too serious. I never thought I would buy a typewriter just for the typeface, but maybe that's changed now...

  4. That is a beautiful typewriter. I have yet to add that model to my collection. That is one of the more unusual, at least to me, script type faces.

  5. Aside from sheer luck, I don't know how one could land a typewriter with a specific typeface in mind, especially when it's an online purchase. I guess you're really lucky to snag that Wright Script SC.

Peter gave Adwoa a machine with that very same typeface. Well, he's from Tacoma where typewriters grow on trees. Oh, wait a minute, I think you're from Tacoma too. Okay, that should explain everything!

    1. Who would have guessed! And one that I'm specifically after that is much more common, Congress Pica, continues to elude me time after time. Weird how things work. I don't really mind. ;)

    2. I found mine at the Deseret store in Federal Way and have seen no typers there since. Funny how that works out. I will have to send in my Adwoa question responses so I can get her to type on it.

  6. I have never seen that typeface before! It does not look real. Wow.
