You should definitely give NaNoWriMo a try. I think you have the ability to just cut loose and let the writing go where it wants to. That's how to do it, I say.
Absolutely consider NaNoWriMo. The real key to hitting the 50,000 word limit is Not To Care. Spelling, grammar, understandable sentences -- let them all go.
The NaNoWriMo Typewriter Brigade will surely be up in force this year, too. I missed their support and lunacy over the summer writing attempt. Usually moments after the NaNo heads restart the forums, we're in there, mocking people and making a mess. It's a lot of fun.
Yes of course attempt NaNo! Good community, lots of fun, and personally it brought forward a lot of story ideas I wouldn't have thought of otherwise.
It is a little harder with school, and this will be my first time after two years out of school trying to do NaNo and homework in the same space and time, but the challenge makes it fun!
